Main formula



Jing fang bai du san


Schizonepeta and Ledebouriella Powder to Overcome Pathogenic Toxin. This formula has good properties for dispelling Wind, eliminating the Cold and relieving the External symptoms. Its ability to relieve the pain is quite limited, so some other herbs should be added to the prescription to relieve the body pain, such as Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae 10g, Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g and Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g, etc.


Alternative formulas



Ma huang tang


Ephedra Decoction. This formula can be specifically used to treat severe invasion of Wind-Cold. Ge Gen Radix Puerariae 10g, Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g, Du Huo Radix Angelicae Pubescentis 10g, Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g and Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g could be added to increase the effect of promoting sweating and relieve the pain.


Gui zhi tang


Cinnamon Twig Decoction. This formula can treat pain due to mild case with invasion of Wind-Cold. Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g, Du Huo Radix Angelicae Pubescentis 10g, Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g and Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g should be added to increase the effect of promoting sweating and relieve the pain.


Ma huang fu zi xi xin tang


Ephedra, Prepared Aconite, and Asarum Decoction. This formula is indicated in entire body pain due to invasion of Wind-Cold resulting from deficiency of Yang. Since there are only three herbs in this formula, which are not sufficient to treat the body pain, some other herbs should be prescribed simultaneously, such as Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g, Du Huo Radix Angelicae Pubescentis 10g and CHUAN XIONG Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g to increase the effect of promoting sweating and relieve the pain.


Da qing long tang


Major Bluegreen Dragon Decoction. This formula is formed based upon Ma Huang Tang. It is indicated in entire body pain due to invasion of Wind-Cold with accumulation of Heat in the Interior, manifested as general body pain, aversion to cold, fever, restlessness, thirst, headache, red tongue, thin and white coating, superficial and tight pulse.

Since this formula has also not much effect to treat the pain directly, some other herbs should be applied simultaneously, such as Ge Gen Radix Puerariae 10g Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g and Du Huo Radix Angelicae Pubescentis 10g to increase the effect of promoting sweating and relieve the pain.


Modifications





1. If there is much headache, add Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g to eliminate Wind-Cold and relieve the headache


2. If there is a stiff neck, add Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae Alba 12g to nourish the Tendons and regulate the circulation of Qi so as to relieve the neck stiffness


3. If there is severe pain with a cold sensation, add Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis 10g and Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g to warm the channels and relieve the pain.

▪ I-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine channel, regulates the Qi circulation in the channels and relieves pain


▪ TE-5, the Connecting (Luo) point of the Triple Burner channel, regulates the Qi circulation in the entire body and relieves the pain


▪ LU-7, the Connecting (Luo) point of the Lung channel, disperses the Lung-Qi, dispels the Wind-Cold, relieves the External symptoms and relieves the pain


▪ GB-40, the Source point of the Gallbladder channel, regulates the Qi circulation and relieves pain


▪ BL-40, the Sea point of the Bladder channel, promotes the Qi circulation. BL-60, the River point, regulates the circulation of Qi

Modifications





1. If there is headache, add GB-20 to dispel Wind-Cold in the head, regulate the Qi circulation and to relieve the headache.


2. If there is a stiff neck, add GB-21 and BL-10 to promote the Qi circulation and to relieve the pain.


3. If there is back pain, add BL-58, the Connecting point, and BL-63, the Accumulating point of the Bladder channel, to regulate the Qi circulation and to relieve the back pain.


4. If there is joint pain, add some local Ah Shi points to regulate the Qi circulation and to relieve the pain. Treatment with moxa on these points is recommended.


5. If there is a high fever and an aversion to cold, add GV-14 to induce sweating and to reduce the fever.





A 33-year-old woman complained of pain in her entire body that had persisted for 15 days. The pain started after she caught a cold 2 weeks previously. When she visited her doctor he had prescribed some painkillers. She had had no relief of the pain, however, so she asked for acupuncture treatment. When she came to the acupuncture department, she had a low fever, an aversion to cold with no sweating, pain and soreness in the entire body, headache, low back pain, joint pain, cold limbs, a pale tongue with a white coating and a superficial pulse.

Dispel External Cold, warm the channels and relieve body pain.


Acupuncture treatment


The points LI-4, LU-7, GB-20, GB-34 and BL-58 were needled daily with reducing method.

▪ LI-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine channel, and LU-7, the Connecting point of the Lung channel, regulate the circulation of the Liver and promote sweating in order to dispel External Wind-Cold from the channels


▪ GB-20, the meeting point of the Gallbladder channel and the Yang Linking channel, promotes the circulation of Qi, dispels External Cold and relieves the headache


▪ GB-34, the Gathering point of the tendons, promotes the Qi circulation and relieves the pain


▪ BL-58, the Connecting point of the Bladder channel, regulates the Qi circulation and relieves the pain.

After the first treatment, the patient sweated slightly and felt relief of the pain. The pain disappeared completely after the third treatment. Upon consultation a year later she reported having been free of pain since the treatment.





Invasion of Wind-Damp



Symptoms and signs


Pain in the entire body with a heavy sensation, soreness and numbness of the muscles, headache with a heavy feeling, painful and swollen joints, low fever, a poor appetite, a thirst without a desire to drink, loose and sticky stools, a white and sticky tongue coating and a deep and slippery pulse are the signs and symptoms of this condition.

Main formula



Qiang huo sheng shi tang


Notopterygium Dispelling Dampness Decoction. This formula could be used to treat entire body pain due to invasion of Wind-Damp, especially Wind, Cold and Damp. Typically this formula was originally designed for headache, but its effect of treating the entire body pain is also obvious. Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g could be added into this formula to strengthen the effect of pain relieving.

Jiu wei qiang huo tang


Nine-herb Decoction with Notopterygium from the Analytic Collection. This formula could be used to treat pain due invasion of Wind-Damp with accumulation of Heat in the Interior, i.e. mixture of External Wind-Damp with Internal Heat. There is usually pain with no sweating, fever, painful body and joints, thirst, bitter taste in the mouth, white and greasy coating of the tongue, superficial pulse.


Ma huang jia zhu tang


Ephedra Decoction plus Atractylodes. This formula could be used to treat mild case of pain due to invasion of Wind, Cold and Damp.


Ma xing yi gan tang


Ephedra Apricot Kernel, Coicis and Licorice Decoction. This formula could be used to treat entire body pain and joint pain at an early stage which has been caused by invasion of Wind, Cold and Damp resulting from improper daily life, such as being caught in the rain or standing in wind after heavy sweating, etc.


Juan bi tang


Remove Painful Obstruction Decoction. This formula is indicated in both acute or chronic entire body pain and joint pain due to invasion of Wind-Damp with deficiency of Qi and Blood. Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong 10g should be added to relieve the body pain.


Du huo ji sheng tang


Angelica Pubescens and Sangjisheng Decoction. This formula is indicated in chronic entire body pain and joint pain due to invasion of Wind-Damp with deficiency of Liver and Kidney.


Modifications





1. If there is headache, add Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g to dispel the Wind and to relieve the headache


2. If there is swelling of the joints, add Fang Ji Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae 10g and Fu Ling Poria 15g to eliminate the Damp and promote the urination.


3. If there is soreness of the muscles, add Mu Gua Fructus Chaenomelis 10g and Yi Yi Ren Semen Coicis 10g to eliminate the Damp and regulate the Qi circulation.


4. If there is heavy sensation in the body, add Can Sha Excrementum Bombycis Mori 10g and Ze Xie Rhizoma Alismatis 15g to promote urination and eliminate the Damp.


5. If there is a low fever, add Huo Xiang Herba Agastachis 6g and Pei Lan Herba Eupatorii 6g to promote the sweating and reduce the fever.


6. If there is a poor appetite, add Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae 10g and Sha Ren Fructus Amomi 6g to dry the Damp and improve the appetite.


7. If there is much body pain, add Wu Shao She Zaocys Dhumnades 10g and Wei Ling Xian Radix Clematidis10g to harmonise the collaterals and to relieve the pain.

Main Points


LU-7 Lieque, TE-6 Zhigou, SP-6 Sanyinjiao, SP-9 Yinlingquan, ST-36 Zusanli, GB-34 Yanglingquan and BL-60 Kunlun. Reducing method is applied on these points. Moxibustion should be applied on Lu-7, TE–6, ST-36 and SP-9.

2. If there is joint pain, add BL-11, the Gathering point for the Bones, BL-20 and local Ah Shi points to regulate the Qi circulation and relieve the pain


3. If there is headache, add GV-20 and Extra Taiyang to promote sweating and relieve the headache


4. If there is a poor appetite, add CV-12, the Front Collecting point of the Stomach, and BL-20, the Back Transporting point of the Stomach, to promote the Qi circulation and improve the appetite


5. If there is numbness in the muscles, add SP-4, the Connecting point of the Spleen channel, to activate the Spleen and Stomach and reduce the numbness.


Invasion of Damp-Heat



Symptoms and signs


Invasion of Damp-Heat can present with pain in the entire body with an acute onset, or chronic pain with an acute aggravation, a hot and heavy sensation in the entire body, swelling of the body, aggravation of the pain by heat, alleviation of the pain by cold, lumbago, scanty and yellow urine, constipation, fever and an aversion to cold, headache, a bitter taste in mouth, thirst, a red tongue with a thick yellow coating and a slippery and rapid pulse.


Principle of treatment


Clear the Heat, eliminate the Damp and relieve the pain.
