Main formula



Xiao yao san


Free and Relaxed Powder. This formula is good at harmonising the Liver and smoothing the emotions. It can be given for the patients with many emotional problems, such as stress, anger and frustration, etc. But the effect of this formula to sedate the cancer pain is rather weak. Some other herbs should be added into this formula to strengthen the therapeutic result, such as Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Yu Jin Tuber Curcumae 10g, Pu Huang Pollen Typhae 10g, Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g and Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi 10g.

Jia wei xiao yao san


Augmented Rambling Powder. This formula is formed based upon XIAO YAO SAN by adding Yuan Zhi Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae, Tao Ren Semen Pruni Persicae, Su Mu Lignum Sappan and Hong Hua Flos Carthami Tinctorii. So this formula has some more effect to promote the Blood circulation besides to promote the Qi This formula is specially indicated in cancer pain due to cancer on skin or some superficial parts of the body, It is not so strong to treat the cancer pain in the Interior organs.


Chai hu shu gan san


Bupleurum Soothing the Liver Powder. This is a good formula to treat the pain due to cancer in the Internal organs, such as Liver pain, Stomach pain, pancreas, pain in the Large Intestine, etc. Actually its effect to harmonise the Liver and smooth the emotion are stronger than its effect to treat the pain due to stagnation of Liver-Qi. Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 15g, Yu Jin Tuber Curcumae 10g, Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae 10g and Ji Xue Teng Caulis Milletiae Reticulatae 10g, etc, should be prescribed simultaneously.


Modifications





1. If there is much pain in the stomach, chest or hypochondriac region, add Qing Pi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride 10g and Chen Xiang Lignum Aquilariae Resinatumi 5g to promote the Qi circulation and relieve the pain


2. If there is low abdominal pain, add Wu Yao Radix Linderae 5g and Ju He Semen Citri Reticulatae 10g to regulate the Qi circulation and relieve the pain


3. If there is sharp pain, add Mo Yao Resina Myrrhae 10g to relieve the pain


4. If there is irritability and nervousness due to generation of Liver-Fire, add Huang Qin Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis 10g and Long Dan Cao Radix Gentianae Longdancao 10g to clear the Liver-Fire and to relieve the nervousness


5. If there is a poor appetite, add Shan Zha Fructus Crataegi 20g and Mai Ya Fructus Hordei Germinatus 20g to improve the appetite


6. If there is fullness in the stomach, add Zhi Shi Fructus Aurantii Immaturus 10g to promote the circulation of Qi and Blood and relieve the fullness


7. If there is constipation, add Da Huang Radix et Rhizoma Rhei 6g and Mang Xiao Natrii Sulfas 15g to promote defecation and remove the stagnation of Qi and Blood.

Main points


LI-4 Hegu, LR-3 Taichong, LR-5 Ligou, LR-14 Qimen, PC-6 Neiguan, CV-17 Tanzhong and GB-20 Fengchi. Reducing method is used on these points.


Explanations





▪ The Liver is in charge of promoting free flow of Qi in the body. If there is prolonged persistence of emotional disturbance the Liver is impaired, so stagnation of Liver-Qi occurs. In fact, stagnation of Liver-Qi may cause stagnation of Qi in the other Zang-Fu organs, such as the Lung, Stomach and Large Intestine. The key treatment therefore is to promote the circulation of Liver-Qi


▪ LR-3, the Source point of the Liver channel, and LR-14, the Front Collecting point of the Liver, regulate the Liver, smooth the Liver and promote the free flow of Liver-Qi


▪ LR-5, the Connecting point of the Liver channel, harmonises the collateral and sedates pain


▪ PC-6, the Connecting point of the Pericardium channel and the point connecting to the Yin Linking Vessel, and CV-17, the Gathering point for the Qi, harmonise the Qi circulation, relax the chest, soothe the emotions, and relieve the blockage in the chest


▪ GB-20 calms the Shen and the Liver and sedates headache


▪ LI-4 regulates the Qi circulation and relieves the pain.

LR-8 Ququan, HT-3 Shaihai, HT-7 Shenmen, BL-15 Xinshu, BL-18 Ganshu, BL-19 Danshu, ST-40 Fenglong and GB-34 Yanglingquan, etc.


Modifications





1. If there is stagnation of Qi in the Stomach and oesophagus, add ST-21 and CV-12 to promote Qi circulation in the Stomach and to sedate the pain


2. If there is pain in the abdomen, add ST-25 and ST-28 to circulate Qi in the abdomen and to sedate the pain


3. If there is coughing and chest pain due to stagnation of Qi in the Lung, add LU-5 and BL-13 to circulate the Qi in the Lung, to cause the Lung-Qi to descend and to relieve the cough


4. If there is pain in the groin or perineum, add LR-11 and LR-12 to harmonise the collaterals and to sedate pain


5. If there is irritability and nervousness, add GV-20 and LR-2 to clear the Heat in the Liver and to suppress the Liver


6. If there is insomnia and restlessness, add HT-3 and HT-8 to calm the Heart and to tranquillise the Mind


7. If there is a poor appetite, belching and nausea, add SP-4, ST-36 and ST-40 to cause the Stomach-Qi to descend and to improve the appetite


8. If there is constipation, add TE-6 and ST-37 to promote the defecation and to relieve the constipation.
