“Kinesiotaping for isolated rib fractures in emergency department”: post-procedure VAS scores

We read with great interest the study “Kinesiotaping for isolated rib fractures in emergency department” published in your journal by Akça HA et al. [ ]. When the literature is reviewed, it is seen that kinesio tape (KT) application is rarely used in musculoskeletal injuries in the emergency department (ED) [ ]. Working on this topic is commendable. In addition, the study results show that KB applications can be used in ED.

In their study, Akça HA et al. compared the KT group and the control group, and it was found that the pain intensity on the 4th day decreased significantly in both groups compared to the baseline ( p < 0.01 for both). However, post-procedure VAS scores were not compared in this study. Although the “VAS after procedure” and “Difference” VAS values of the KT group were calculated, these values of the control group were not calculated. In the study, they also determined that there was a significant decrease in the severity of pain of the patients within 15 min after the KT application [ ]. However, they did not calculate the pain score in the first 15 min in the control group and did not perform statistical analysis between groups. Therefore, we do not know which treatment method is more effective in terms of pain effectiveness among the post-procedure groups. This does not give us any information about the efficacy of KT in the first hours of treatment. In order to understand the effectiveness of the KT application in the first time, the VAS values of the control group in the study should be shared in the first 15 min after the application.
