G Gastrectomy




1. Introduction

Total gastrectomy is annually performed for gastric cancer.



2. Preoperative assessment and patient preparation
a) History and physical: Assess fluid and hydration status. The patient may be vomiting or bleeding or may have anorexia.

b) Diagnostic tests
(1) Abdominal radiography

(2) Laboratory tests include a complete blood count, electrolytes, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, magnesium, calcium, phosphate, prothrombin time, and partial thromboplastin time. Perform other tests based on history and physical examination.

c) Preoperative medication and IV therapy
(1) Expect a moderate fluid shift with moderate to large fluid losses. Two large-bore IV catheters (14- to 16-gauge) are indicated.
