Personal medical kits – simple first aid kits should be carried by all members including a supply of their own regular medication. The main medical kit is for emergencies.
Dental checks – dental issues are very common and can be a disaster. Encourage an early check-up, including you.
Vaccinations/antimalarials – be clear on current advice and lead by example. Websites such as www.nathnac.org are useful.
Travel insurance – medevacs and repatriations are rarely straightforward so clarify exactly what you and the team will be covered for. For example, you may not be covered for treatment in the country of your choice.
Risk assessment – create a risk assessment, considering the worst possible consequences from any event and its likelihood. Research local hazards. Most companies will have already created a risk matrix. Read it and feed back.
Local hospitals/clinics – make contact if possible and research their capabilities.
Evacuation – the insurance company will liaise with a repatriation or air ambulance company. Find out which one they will be using.
