CHAPTER 27 THERAPEUTIC HYPOTHERMIA IN CARDIAC ARREST

Mild Therapeutic Hypothermia to Improve the Neurologic Outcome After Cardiac Arrest

Hypothermia After Cardiac Arrest Study Group. N Engl J Med. 2002;346(8):549–556

BACKGROUND

Cardiac arrest resulting in cerebral hypoperfusion frequently leads to severe neurologic morbidity and mortality. At the time of this study, only animal models and case report data showed compelling evidence of the benefit of therapeutic hypothermia following cardiac arrest. This study investigated whether mild hypothermia could lead to favorable neurologic outcomes in human subject resuscitation from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

OBJECTIVES

To determine the effect of mild hypothermia on neurologic outcome after cardiac arrest.

METHODS

Multicenter, randomized controlled trial at nine centers in five European countries between 1996 and 2001.
