CHAPTER 62 STRESS TESTING IN THE ED

Immediate Exercise Testing of Low Risk Patients with Known Coronary Artery Disease Presenting to the Emergency Department with Chest Pain

Lewis WR, Amsterdam EA, Turnipseed S, Kirk JD. J Am Coll Cardiol. 1999;33:1843–1847

BACKGROUND

At the time of this study nearly 3 million patients were admitted in the United States annually for chest pain. Seventy percent of these patients ultimately had a negative cardiac workup. Prior to this study the authors had demonstrated the safety of immediate exercise treadmill testing (ETT) in low-risk patients with no known coronary artery disease (CAD), but it was not yet known if immediate ETT was safe and effective for those with known CAD.

OBJECTIVES

To demonstrate the use and safety of ETT in low-risk patients with known CAD presenting to the ED with chest pain.

METHODS

Prospective observational cohort study conducted in a single US ED from 1993 to1998.
