CHAPTER 60 RISK OF SEIZURE RECURRENCE IN PEDIATRICS

The Risk of Seizure Recurrence After a First Unprovoked Afebrile Seizure in Childhood: An Extended Follow-up

Shinnar S, Berg AT, Moshe SL, et al. Pediatrics. 1996;98:216–225

BACKGROUND

Prior to 1996, reported risk of recurrent seizure after first unprovoked seizure in childhood varied dramatically. This made prognostication difficult and resulted in significant anxiety in parents. At the time of this study, the significance of first unprovoked seizure in childhood was unknown, prompting a search to find better ways of risk-stratifying children.

OBJECTIVES

To assess the risk of recurrent seizure after a first unprovoked seizure in two populations of children: Children with underlying precipitant neurologic stress, and children who would not otherwise be expected to have a seizure.

METHODS

Prospective observational study at five hospitals in several private practice locations in New York City between 1983 and 1992.
