Nasal pain
Magnolia Flower Powder. This is a very good formula, especially designed for nasal problems due to invasion of Wind-Cold. It opens the nasal orifice, eliminates Damp-Phlegm and relieves the nasal pain. But as its effect on the External symptoms is not so strong it could be combined with a formula which is strongly indicated to relieve these, such as Gui Zhi Tang, etc.
Ephedra Decoction. This formula is indicated in nasal pain due to severe invasion of Wind-Cold with lack of sweating. Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g, Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g and Jie Gen Radix Platycodi 5g could be added to increase the effect of promoting sweating and relieve the nasal pain.
Cinnamon Twig Decoction. This formula is indicated in nasal pain due to slight invasion of Wind-Cold with sweating. Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g, Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g and Jie Gen Radix Platycodi 5g could be added to increase the effect of dispelling Wind-Cold, harmonising the Nutrient Qi and Defensive Qi and relieve the nasal pain.
Scallion and Prepared Soybean Decoction. This formula is used to treat slight invasion of Wind-Cold with mild External symptoms. Some other herbs should be added into the prescription to increase the effect on nasal pain, such as Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g, Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g, Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g and Jie Gen Radix Platycodi 5g, etc.
1. If there is much nasal pain, add Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g to eliminate the Cold and relieve the nasal pain
2. If there is much fever and an aversion to cold, add Chai Hu Radix Bupleuri 5g to promote sweating, dispel the Wind and reduce the fever
3. If there is much cough and expectoration of white phlegm due to the invasion of the Lung by Wind-Cold, add Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae 10g and Chen Pi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae 5g to disperse the Lung-Qi, dispel the Wind-Cold and relieve the cough
4. If there is headache, add Man Jing Zi Fructus Viticis 10g to dispel the Wind and relieve the headache.
Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao Wan Ligusticum and Green Tea Regulating Pill.
LI-4 Hegu, LI-20 Yingxiang, LU-7 Lieque, LU-6 Kongzui, BL-2 Zanzhu, BL-12 Fengmen, BL-13 Feishu and BL-64 Jinggu. Reducing method is used on these points. Moxibustion should be used on LI-4, LU-7, BL-12 and BL-13.
▪ LI-4 and LU-7 open the skin pores and promote sweating so as to dispel Wind-Cold. Also, these two points relieve problems on the face, including nasal problems. Since the Large Intestine channel ends at the nose, LI-4, the Source point, promotes circulation of Qi and Blood in the channel so as to relieve the blockage. LU-7, the Connecting point, opens the nasal orifice and eliminates blockage in the nose.
▪ LI-20, BL-2 and BL-64 promote the physiological function of the nose, relieve blockage and sedate the pain.
▪ LU-6, the Accumulation point, promotes Qi circulation in the Lung channel and arrests pain in the nose.
▪ BL-12 and BL-13 dispel Wind-Cold and relieve the symptoms from disorder of the Lung system.
Moxibustion dispels Wind-Cold, relieve the External symptoms and sedates the nasal pain.
ST-3 Juliao, ST-42 Chongyang, ST-43 Xiangu, LI-19 Kouheliao, SI-18 Quanliao, BL-2 Zanzhu, BL-4 Quchai, BL-5 Wuchu and BL-6 Chengguang, etc.
1. If there is severe cough with expectoration of white phlegm, due to failure of the Lung to disperse Qi, add LU-1 and LU-5 to disperse the Lung-Qi and relieve the cough
2. If there is expectoration of profuse phlegm, add SP-6 and ST-40 to activate the Spleen and Stomach and resolve the Phlegm
3. If there is a diminishment or lack of the sense of smell due to nasal blockage and the Lung is failing to disperse Lung-Qi properly, add SI-18 and ST-36 to clear the nasal passage and tonify the Lung-Qi
4. If there is chest pain due to stagnation of Lung-Qi, add CV-17 to promote the Qi circulation in the chest and relieve the pain.
A 53-year-old man had complained of nose pain with a blocked nose for 10 days, when he had caught a cold. The doctor diagnosed a cold and rhinitis and gave him some tablets for the cold. There had been some improvement in his headache and fever, but not the nasal pain, so he had requested acupuncture treatment.
When he arrived in the acupuncture department, he had a slight headache, an aversion to cold, a stiff neck, a clear nasal discharge and a cold sensation on his limbs besides the nose pain. His tongue was thin and white, and pulse was superficial and wiry, especially at the first level of the right Cun position.
Invasion of External Cold.
Promote Lung-Qi circulation, dispel Wind-Cold and relieve the nasal pain.
LI-4 Hegu, LI-20 Yingxiang, LU-7 Lieque, BL-2 Zanzhu, BL-7 Tongtian and GB-20 Fengchi were needled with reducing method. One treatment was given every day.
▪ LI-4 is the Source point of the Large Intestine channel. LU-7 is the Connecting point of the Lung channel. These two points in combination regulate Lung-Qi and dispel External Cold in the Lung channels, as well as clearing the blocked nose. When the pathogenic factors are dispelled, nasal pain will disappear.
▪ CB-20 is the patent point to regulate the Qi and improve the sense of smell. Here it can also serve as a point to dispel Wind-Cold and relieve External symptoms.
▪ BL-7 warms the channels and regulates the Qi circulation in the vicinity, especially for nasal disorders.
▪ LI-20 and BL-2 increase the circulation of Qi in the nose so as to relieve the pain.
▪ After being treated for 1 week, the nasal pain had completely resolved.
Half year later he was followed up, and had experienced no more nasal pain since the end of the acupuncture treatment.
Acute nasal pain, redness and swelling of the nose, a yellow nasal discharge, fever, a slight aversion to cold, headache, a thirst, a cough with yellow expectoration, redness and pain of the throat, a red tongue, especially at the tip, with a thin and yellow coating and a superficial and rapid pulse, especially at the Lung position.
Dispel Wind, clear Heat, disperse the Lung-Qi and relieve the nasal pain.
Xanthium Powder. This is a very good formula to treat all the nasal problems due to invasion of Wind-Heat. However, its effect on Wind-Heat is not strong enough, so some other herbs, such as Sang Ye Folium Mori 10g, Ju Hua Flos Chrysanthemi 10g, Jie Geng Radix Platycodi 5g, Lian Qiao Fructus Forsythiae 10g, and Xing Ren Semen Armeniacae Amarum 10g should be added into the prescription to relieve the External symptoms.
Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Decoction. This formula is indicated in invasion of Wind-Heat to the Lung system. However, its effect on nasal pain is insufficient, therefore some other herbs, such as Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g, Xin Yi Flos Magnoliae 10g and Zhi Zi Fructus Gardeniae 10g, etc., should be added to strongly relieve the nasal pain.
Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Licorice, and Gypsum Decoction. This formula clears the Heat, disperses the Lung-Qi and stops the cough. It can be used to treat the nasal pain due to invasion of Wind-Heat by adding some herbs, such as Sang Ye Folium Mori 10g, Jin Ying Hua Flos Lonicerae 10g, Jie Geng Radix Platycodi 5g and Lian Qiao Fructus Forsythiae 10g, etc.
1. If the nose is red and swollen, add Pu Gong Ying Herba Taraxaci 10g to clear the Heat, eliminate the Toxin and reduce the swelling
2. If there is a discharge of yellow liquid from the nose, add Huang Qin Radix Scutellariae 10g and Zi Hua Di Ding Herba Violae 15g to eliminate the Toxin and clear the Heat
3. If there is fever due to predominance of Heat invasion, add Chai Hu Radix Bupleuri 5g and Sheng Ma Rhizoma Cimicifugae 5g to clear the Heat and reduce the fever
4. If there is headache due to disturbance of the clear Yang in the head by Wind-Heat, add Man Jing Zi Fructus Viticis 10g to dispel the Wind-Heat and sedate the headache
5. If there is a cough and expectoration of yellow phlegm due to invasion of the Lung by Wind-Heat, add Qian Hu Radix Peucedani 10g and Zhe Bei Mu Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii 10g to disperse the Lung-Qi and dispel the Wind-Heat.
Yin Qio Pian Honeysuckle and Forsythia Tablet.
Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian Honeysuckle and Forsythia Tablet to Overcome Toxins.
LI-4 Hegu, LI-20 Yingxiang, LU-6 Kongzui, LU-7 Lieque, LU-10 Yuji, BL-2 Zanzhu, BL-12 Fengmen, BL-13 Feishu and BL-64 Jinggu. Reducing method is used on these points.
▪ LI-4 and LU-7 open the skin pores and promote sweating so as to relieve invasion of Wind-Heat, LI-4, the Source point, promotes circulation of Qi and Blood in this channel so as to relieve the blocked nose. LU-7, the Connecting point, opens the nasal orifice and unblocks the nose

▪ LU-10, the Spring point, clears Heat, reduces the swelling and relieves the nasal pain
▪ BL-12 and BL-13 dispel Wind-Heat and relieve the symptoms of Lung channel disorder.
ST-3 Juliao, ST-43 Xiangu, LI-19 Kouheliao, BL-7 Tongtian, BL-9 Yuzhen and BL-10 Tianzhu, etc.
1. If there is fever due to severe invasion of Heat, add GV-14 and LI-11 to clear the Heat and reduce the fever
2. If there is a cough with expectoration of yellow phlegm due to invasion of Lung by Wind-Heat, add LU-5, the Sea point, and ST-40 to disperse the Lung-Qi, clear the Heat and resolve the Phlegm
3. If there is a thirst, add LU-8, the Metal point, to promote the secretion of Body Fluids and relieve the thirst
4. If there is headache due to disturbance of the clear Yang by Wind-Heat, add GB-20 and Extra Taiyang to dispel the Wind-Heat and relieve the headache.
Symptoms and signs of Toxic Heat invasion are acute onset of nasal pain, redness, heat and swelling in the nose, a yellow discharge, high fever, a slight aversion to cold, headache, thirst, a cough with yellow expectoration, redness and pain in the throat, a red tongue, specially the tip, with a thin and yellow coating, and a superficial and rapid pulse, specially at the Lung position.
Clear the Heat, remove the Toxin and stop the pain.

Five-Ingredient Decoction to Eliminate Toxin. This formula is very good at eliminating the Toxin and subsiding the swelling. Some other herbs to sedate the nasal pain, such as Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g, Xin Yi Flos Magnoliae 10g, Cang Er Zi Fructus Xanthii Sibirici 10g and Jie Gen Radix Platycodi 5g could be added to relieve the nasal pain.
Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity. This formula is good for clearing the Toxic and reducing the Fire, but its effect on the nasal pain is not sufficient, so some other herbs have to added, such as Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g, Xin Yi Flos Magnoliae 10g, and Cang Er Zi Fructus Xanthii Sibirici 10g etc.
Universal Benefit Decoction to Eliminate Toxin. This formula in indicated for clearing the Heat, removing the Toxin and reducing the swelling. Pu Gong Ying Herba Taraxaci 10g, Ban Lan Gen Radix isatidis 10g and Jin Yin Hua Flos Lonicerae Japonicae 10g could be added to relieve the nasal pain.
1. If there is a high fever and an aversion to cold, add Shi Gao Gypsum Fibrosum 30g to clear the Heat and lower the body temperature
2. If there is a headache, add and Man Jing Zi Fructus Viticis 10g to clear the Toxic Heat and relieve the headache
3. If there is a fever with thirst, add Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis 5g, Da Qing Ye Folium isatidis10g and Zhi Mu Rhizoma Anemarrhenae 10g to clear the Heat and relieve the thirst
4. If there is constipation, add Da Huang Radix et Rhizoma Rhei 10g and Mang Xiao Natrii Sulfas 10g to clear the Fire by promoting the defecation
5. If there is a yellow discharge, add Niu Bang Zi Fructus Arctii 10g and Dan Nan Xing Arisaema cum Bile 10g to clear the Heat, eliminate the Phlegm and relieve the cough.
Niu Huang Jie Du Pian Cattle Gallstone Tablet to Resolve Toxin.
LI-4 Hegu, LI-11 Quchi, LI-20 Yingxiang, LU-5 Chize, LU-7 Lieque, LU-10 Yuji, ST-3 Juliao, ST-44 Neiting, SP-6 Sanyinjiao and GV-10 Lingtai. Reducing method is used on these points.
▪ LI-14 and LI-11 clear Heat, remove the Toxin and reduce the fever.
▪ LI-20 and ST-3 clear Heat and Toxin in the nose.
▪ LU-5, LU-10 and LU-7 clear the Heat, disperse the Lung-Qi and relieve the cough. Also, they promote the opening of the nose.
