Lip pain
Schizonepeta and Ledebouriella Powder to Overcome Pathogenic Influences. This formula could dispel the External Wind, eliminate the Cold and relieve the External symptoms. It has no specific effect to relieve the lip pain due to invasion of Wind-Cold. Some other herbs could be added into the prescription to harmonise the collaterals and promote the circulation in the channels, such as Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi 6g, Xi Xian Cao Herba Siegesbeckiae 10g and Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g, etc.
Ligusticum–Green Tea Regulating Powder. This formula could be used to treat lip pain with headache due to invasion of Wind-Cold. However, some other herbs could be added into the prescription to harmonise the collaterals and promote the circulation in the channels, such as Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi 6g and Xi Xian Cao Herba Siegesbeckiae 10g, etc.
Ephedra Decoction. This formula could be used to treat severe invasion of Wind-Cold. Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g and Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g could be added to relieve the lip pain.
Cinnamon Twig Decoction. This formula could be to treat slight invasion of Wind-Cold. Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g and Bai Zhi Radix Angelicae Dahuricae 10g could be added to relieve the lip pain.
1. If the lips are swollen, add Qing Dai Indigo Naturalis 5g to eliminate the Toxin and reduce the swelling
2. If there is an aggravation of lip pain on exposure to cold, add Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis 5g to warm the Interior and dispel the Cold
3. If the lips are a purplish colour, add Chi Shao Radix Paeoniae Rubra 10g and Dan Shen Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae 10g to promote the Blood circulation and eliminate the Blood stagnation
4. If there is headache, add Man Jing Zi Fructus Viticis 10g to dispel the Wind-Cold and sedate the headache
5. If there is a cough and expectoration of white phlegm Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae 10g and Bai Jie Zi Semen Sinapis Albae 10g to dispel the Cold in the Lung and relieve the cough.
Jing Fang Bai Du Pian Schizonepeta and Ledebouriella Tablet to overcome Pathogenic Influences.
Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao Pian Ligusticum and Green Tea Regulating Powder.
LI-4 Hegu, LU-7 Lieque, BL-12 Fengmen, TE-5 Waiguan, CV-24 Chengjiang and ST-4 Dicang. Reducing method is used on these points.
▪ LI-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine channel, and LU-7, the Connecting point of the Lung channel, promote sweating, dispel Wind, eliminate Cold and relieve the lip pain
▪ TE-5 dispels Wind, and eliminates and relieves the lip pain
▪ BL-12 dispels Wind-Cold and relieves the general symptoms due to invasion of Wind- Cold
▪ CV-24 and ST-4, the local points, promote the circulation in the collateral, reduce the swelling and relieve the lip pain.
ST-5 Daying, ST-6 Jiache, ST-40 Fenglong, ST-42 Chongyang and ST-43 Xiangu, etc.
1. If there is severe lip pain, add ST-34 and SP-8, the Accumulation points, to harmonise the collaterals and relieve the lip pain
2. If the lips are swollen, add ST-42, the Source point of the Stomach channel, to promote the circulation in the channel and reduce the swelling
3. If there is aggravation of the lip pain on exposure to cold, add moxibustion on LI-4, TE-5 and CV-6 to warm the Interior and dispel the Cold
4. If there are insect bites, add SP-6 and GV-10 to eliminate the Toxin and reduce the swelling
5. If there is headache, add GB-20 to dispel the Wind-Cold and sedate the headache
6. If there is cough and expectoration of white phlegm due to invasion of Wind-Cold in the Lung, add LU-5, the Sea point of the Lung channel, and BL-13, the Back Transporting point of the Lung, to disperse the Lung-Qi, dispel the Wind-Cold and relieve the cough.
Symptoms and signs are sudden onset of lip pain with a burning feeling, yellow blisters on the lips, red and swollen lips, fever, a slight aversion to cold, headache, thirst, cough, a red-tipped tongue with a thin and yellow coating, and a superficial and rapid pulse.
Dispel the Wind, clear the Heat, remove the Toxin and relieve the lip pain.

Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder. This formula also dispels the Wind and clears the Heat. It also has some effects on removing the Toxin and reducing the swelling. Sang Ye Folium Mori 10g, Ju Hua Flos Chrysanthemi 10g, Zhu Ye Herba Lophatheri 6g and Huang Qin Radix Scutellariae 10g could be added into the prescription to increase the therapeutic result of dispelling Wind-Heat, removing Toxin and relieving the lip pain.
Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum Decoction. This formula dispels Wind-Heat, disperses the Lung-Qi and relieves the cough. When it is used to treat lip pain due to invasion of Wind-Heat, Huang Qin Radix Scutellariae 10g and Ban Lan Gen Radix Isatidis seu Baphicacanthi 10g, etc., should be added to relieve the lip pain.
Bupleurum and Kudzu Decoction to Release the Muscle Layer. This formula has strong function to dispel Wind-Heat and relieve the muscle pain and lip pain.
1. If there are yellow blisters on the lips, add Long Dan Cao Radix Gentianae 5g and Zi Hua Di Ding Herba Violae 10g to clear the Heat and eliminate the Toxin
2. If the lips are swollen, add Huang Lian Rhizoma Coptidis 5g and Chi Shao Yao Radix Paeoniae Rubra 10g to promote the Blood circulation and reduce the swelling
3. If the lips are dry, or cracked, add Lu Gen Rhizoma Phragmitis 10g and Yu Zhu Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati 10g to promote the secretion of Body Fluids and relieve the Dryness
4. If there is headache, add Man Jing Zi Fructus Viticis 10g to dispel the Wind-Heat and sedate the headache
5. If there is a cough and expectoration of yellow phlegm due to invasion of the Lung by Wind-Heat, add Zhe Bei Mu Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii 10g to eliminate Phlegm and relieve the cough.
Yin Qiao Pian Honeysuckle and Forsythia Tablet.
Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian Honeysuckle and Forsythia Tablet to Overcome Toxins.
LI-2 Erjian, LI-4 Hegu, LU-7 Lieque, LU-10 Yuji, TE-5 Waiguan, CV-24 Chengjiang, ST-4 Dicang and GV-28 Yinjiao. Reducing method is used on these points.
▪ LI-2 and LU-10, the Spring points from the Large Intestine and Lung channels respectively, clear the Heat, reduce the fever, reduce the swelling and stop the lip pain
▪ LI-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine channel, and LU-7, the Connecting point of the Lung channel, promote the sweating, dispel the Wind, clear the Heat and eliminate the Toxin
▪ TE-5 dispels the Wind, clears the Heat and relieves the lip pain
▪ CV-24, ST-4 and GV-28, the local points, clear the Heat and reduce the swelling.
LU-1 Zhongfu, LU-11 Shaoshang, BL-12 Fengmen, LI1 Shangyang, ST-5 Daying, ST-6 Jiache and ST-42 Chongyang, etc.
1. If there are many blisters with yellow discharge owing to the invasion of Toxic Damp-Heat, add GB-43 and ST-44 to eliminate the Toxin, eliminate the Damp and clear the Heat
2. If the lips are swollen, add ST-40, the Connecting point of the Stomach channel, to reduce the swelling and diminish the lip pain
3. If there is fever, add GV-14 to clear the Heat and reduce the fever
4. If there is a headache, add GB-20 to dispel the Wind-Heat and sedate the headache
5. If there is a cough and expectoration of yellow phlegm due to invasion of Wind-Heat in the Lung, add BL-12 and BL-13 to disperse the Lung-Qi and dispel the Wind-Heat.
A 10-year-old girl had suffered from lip pain for 8 days. She had been ill with acute cheilitis on her arrival from south China 10 days previously. She had been given Western medical treatment with antibiotics for 10 days. After this treatment, her lip swelling had improved, but the pain remained.
When she arrived at the clinic, she still had slightly swollen lips, especially the lower lip. The pain was constant with a slightly burning feeling. Besides painful lips, she had a slight aversion to cold, a fever (38.4°C), thirst, a dry mouth and sore throat, constipation, a red tip to her tongue and a dry yellow coating, and a floating and rapid pulse.
Invasion of Wind-Heat.
Principle of treatment
Clear Heat, dispel Wind and relieve the pain.
LI-2 Erjian, LI-4 Hegu, LU-7 Lieque, TE-5 Waiguan and ST-25 Tianshu were needled with reducing method. Treatment was given daily, over a period of 6 days.
▪ LI-2, the Spring point, clears Fire in the Bright Yang channels and cools the Large Intestine channel, which has an Internal and External relationship with the Lung.
▪ LI-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine channel, promotes sweating, clears Heat and reduces Fire.
▪ LU-7, the Connecting point of the Lung channels, dispels Wind-Heat and reduces Fire.
▪ TE-5, the Connecting point of the Triple Burner channel, dispels Wind-Heat, regulates the circulation of Qi and reduces Heat.
