Introduction



  • Used to rapidly secure vascular access in critically ill children with circulatory collapse or difficult IV access


  • Can be used in all ages (consider battery-powered E-Z IOTM for older children and adolescents)


Indications



  • If unable to establish peripheral or central access in a timely fashion in a critically ill child, intraosseous route may be lifesaving



    • Guideline: three peripheral stabs unsuccessful, OR 90 seconds


  • Usually children < 6 years of age



    • May be used in older children if no other route available


  • Can use to administer all fluids, blood products, and drugs that can be administered intravenously


Contraindications


Absolute Contraindications



  • Recent fracture in bone


  • Recent intraosseous infusion in bone


  • Osteogenesis imperfecta


  • Osteopetrosis
