Finger pain
Remove Painful Obstruction Decoction. This formula, which dispels the Wind, eliminates the Cold, resolves the Damp, promotes the Qi and Blood circulation and relieves the pain, is indicated in hand pain due to invasion of Wind, Cold and Damp with stagnation of Qi and Blood. Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong 10g, Hai Feng Teng Caulis Piperis Futokadsurae 10g and Sang Zhi Fructus Gardeniae 10g should be added to relieve the pain.
Ephedra, Prepared Aconite, and Asarum Decoction. This formula has the strong effect of dispelling the Wind, eliminating the Cold and relieving the pain, indicated in invasion of Wind-Cold. When it is used to treat finger pain due to invasion of Wind, Cold and Damp, Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g, Du Huo Radix Angelicae Pubescentis 10g, Hai Feng Teng Caulis Piperis Futokadsurae 10g and Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g should be added to increase the promotion of sweat and relieve the pain.
Disband Painful Obstruction Decoction. This formula, which clears the Heat, eliminates the Damp and relieves the pain, is indicated in finger pain due to invasion of Wind, Damp and Heat. Jiang Huang Rhizoma Curcumae Longae 15g, Hai Tong Pi Cortex Erythrinae 15g and Sang Zhi Ramulus Mori 15g, etc., could be added to the prescription to relieve the pain.
1. If there is a severe aversion to cold and muscular spasm, add Rou Gui Cortex Cinnamomi 6g to warm the channels and collaterals and relieve the spasm
2. If there is swelling or heaviness in the fingers due to the predominance of the invasion of Damp, add Cang Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis 10g to remove the Damp and sedate the pain
3. If the appetite is poor, add Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae 10g and Bai Kou Ren Semen Amomi Rotundus 5g to dry the Damp and improve the appetite
4. If there is a fever, add Huang Qin Radix Scutellariae 10g and Da Qing Ye Folium isatidis 10g to clear the Heat and reduce the fever
5. If the hand and the joints are swollen, add Han Fang Ji Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae 10g and Jiang Huang Rhizoma Curcumae Longae 10g to eliminate Damp-Heat and reduce the swelling
6. If the joints are reddish, add Jin Yin Hua Flos Lonicerae 10g, Sang Zhi Ramulus Mori 10g and Luo Shi Teng Caulis Trachelospermi 15g to clear Damp-Heat and cool the Blood.
Feng Shi Pian Wind-Damp Tablet.
LI-4 Hegu, TE-5 Waiguan, CV-12 Zhongwan, SP-6 Sanyinjiao, SP-9 Yinlingquan, Extra Baxie and local Ah Shi points. Reducing method is used on these points. It is advisable to use moxibustion on LI-4, TE-5 and Extra Baxie If there is invasion of Cold-Damp.
▪ L1–4, the Source point of the Large Intestine channel, and TE-5, the Connecting point of the Triple Burner channel, promote the circulation of Qi and Blood in the hands and relieve the finger pain
▪ CV-12, the Front Collecting point of the Stomach and the Gathering point for all the Fu organs, removes obstructions from the channels, invigorates the circulation of Qi in the collateral and eliminates both Cold and Damp
▪ SP-6, the crossing point of the three Yin channels of the foot, promotes urination and eliminates Damp
▪ SP-9, the Sea point of the Spleen channel, activates the Spleen and Stomach and eliminates the Damp
▪ The Extra Baxie and Ah Shi points promote the circulation of Qi in the local channels and collateral and stop the pain
▪ Moxibustion warms the needles so as to warm the channels and Middle Burner, dispels Cold and relieves Damp.
1. If there is a severe aversion to cold and muscular spasm, add moxibustion on CV-6 to warm the channels and collateral and relieve the spasm
2. If the fingers are swollen and there is a heavy sensation in the body due to an invasion of Damp, add TE-6 and ST-36 to remove the Damp and reduce the swelling
3. If the appetite is poor, add LR-13, the Front Collecting point of the Spleen, and SP-3, the Source point of the Spleen channel, to activate the Spleen and Stomach, regulate the circulation of Qi and improve the appetite.
A 30-year-old woman had been suffering from finger pain on both sides for 5 months. She had a heavy sensation in both hands, and rigidity of the fingers in the morning, accompanied by a poor appetite, fatigue, abdominal distension, loose stools, a white and watery tongue coating and a soft and slow pulse. At the hospital she was diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis.
Invasion of Cold-Damp in the channels with Spleen and Kidney-Yang deficiency.
Dispel Wind, Cold and Damp, tonify the Yang-Qi and sedate the pain.
Angelica Four Rebellious Decoction
Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi 10g
Dang Gui Radix Angelicae Sinensis 10g
Qing Feng Teng Caulis Sinomenii 30g
Jiang Huang Rhizoma Curcumae Longae 10g
Xi Xin Herba Asari 3g
Fu Ling Poria 15g
Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae 5g.
▪ Gui Zhi and Dang Gui promote the circulation of Blood, tonify the Yang-Qi, warm the channels and relieve the pain
▪ Gui Zhi and Xi Xin warm the channels, dispel Cold and relieve the finger pain
▪ Fu Ling activates the Spleen and Stomach and eliminates Damp
▪ Qing Feng Teng and Jiang Huang are good at dispelling Wind-Damp and relieving the painful joints.
▪ Gan Cao harmonises the actions of the other herbs in the formula.
The patient had daily treatment with the herbal decoction. She was also advised to wash her painful fingers with the remainder of the hot herbs after decocting them. Every day she kept her fingers warm. After 3 months of treatment, her finger pain had disappeared. She was followed up 2 years later and reported that she had experienced no more finger pain since the herbal treatment.
Symptoms are gradual occurrence of swelling, redness and pain in the fingers, which worsens in damp and warm weather, heaviness and numbness in the fingers with a warm or even burning sensation, with difficulty in grasping, limitation of joint movement and spasm of the fingers.
Accompanying symptoms include a feeling of heaviness in the body generally, an aversion to cold, a poor appetite, loose stools, a red tongue with a yellow and greasy coating and a deep, slippery and rapid or tight and rapid pulse.
Clear the Heat, Dry the Damp, regulate the circulation of Qi and relieve the pain.

Four-Marvel Powder. Although this formula is mainly indicated in Downward flow of Damp-Heat, it is still suitable for treating finger pain due to accumulation of Damp-Heat. Of course, then some other herbs have to used in combination, such as Jiang Huang Rhizoma Curcumae Longae 15g, Hai Tong Pi Cortex Erythrinae 15g, Fang Ji Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae 10g, Dang Gui Radix Angelicae Sinensis 10g and Ren Dong Teng Ramus Lonicerae Japonicae 15g, etc.
1. If there is a fever, add Shi Gao Gypsum Fibrosum 20g and Zhi Mu Rhizoma Anemarrhenae 10g to clear the Heat and reduce the fever
2. If the fingers are swollen and red, add Bi Xie Rhizoma Dioscoreae Septemlobrae 10g and Tu Fu Ling Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae 10g to clear the Heat, eliminate the Damp and reduce the swelling
3. If there is severe spasm in the fingers, add Bai Jiang Cao Herba Patriniae 10g and Bai Hua She Agkistrodon Acutus 10g to promote the circulation in the channels and relax the Tendons
4. If the fingers are deformed, add Wu Jia Pi Cortex Acanthopanacis Radicis 10g and Di Long Lumbricus 10g to strengthen the Tendons and bones and relieve obstruction in the channels
