CHAPTER 31 EPINEPHRINE IN CARDIAC ARREST
A Comparison of Repeated High Doses and Repeated Standard Doses of Epinephrine for Cardiac Arrest Outside the Hospital
Gueugniaud PY, Mols P, Goldstein P, et al. N Engl J Med. 1998;339(22):1595–1601
BACKGROUND
Epinephrine has long been the first-choice agent for blood pressure support in patients with cardiac arrest. Prior to this study there had been significant evidence that higher doses of epinephrine improved myocardial and cerebral blood flow. Small studies had never confirmed a significant effect on patient mortality in cardiac arrest.
OBJECTIVES
To compare the efficacy of low-dose (1 mg repeated) vs. high-dose (5 mg) epinephrine in adults with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
METHODS
Randomized, controlled trial conducted in 12 European centers between 1994 and 1996.
