Main formula



Liang fu wan


Galangal and Cyperus Pill. This is a very simple herbal formula, consisting of only two herbs but its function is unique: Gao Liang Jiang Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum dispels the Wind-Cold, warms the stomach and relieves the pain; while Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi promotes the Qi and Blood circulation and harmonises the Stomach so as to relieve the epigastric pain. If used properly and in time, the pain could be under the control very quickly.


Alternative formula



Gui zhi tang


Cinnamon Twig Decoction. This formula can be used to treat slight invasion of Wind-Cold. When it is used to treat the stomach pain due to invasion of Wind-Cold, Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g and Gao Liang Jiang Rhizoma Alpiniae Officinarum 5g could be used to relieve the pain.


Modifications





1. If the pain is not severe and is caused by excessive consumption of cold drinks, use Sheng Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis 5g, brown sugar 5g with 200ml water. Cook them together for 10 minutes, and then drink the liquid slowly to warm the Stomach and dispel the Cold


2. If there are severe External symptoms, add Zi Su Ye Folium Perillae 10g to expel the Wind-Cold, Chen Pi Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae 5g and Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata 3g to harmonise the Stomach-Qi


3. If there is much vomiting, add Ban Xia Radix Pinelliae 10g to cause the Stomach-Qi to descend and relieve the vomiting


4. If the pain is fixed and heavy, add Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g to promote the Qi and Blood circulation and stop the pain


5. If the Cold in the Stomach is severe and the cramp is obvious, add Wu Zhu Yu Fructus Evodiae 5g to expel the Cold and warm the Stomach


6. If the pain is caused by emotional disturbance, add Chai Hu Radix Bupleuri 5g and Mu Xiang Radix Aucklandiae 5g to regulate the Liver-Qi and smooth the emotions.

Invasion of Cold-Damp



Symptoms and signs


Acute onset of stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, a feeling of fullness and cold in the epigastric region, loose stools or diarrhoea, fever, aversion to cold, generalised pain, a white and sticky tongue coating and a soft pulse.


Principle of treatment


Expel the Cold, transform the Damp, regulate the Qi in the Middle Burner and stop the pain.




Stagnation of Food



Symptoms and signs


Epigastric pain with history of overeating and drinking or irregular eating, full and distending sensation in the stomach, belching with a foul smell, vomiting, which reduces the pain, possible poor appetite, loose stool or constipation, abdominal swelling, a normal or slightly red tongue with a sticky coating and a wiry, slippery pulse are symptoms and signs of this condition.


Principle of treatment


Promote the digestion, regulate the Qi of the Stomach and stop the pain.

Main formula



Bao he wan


Preserving and Harmonising Pill. This is a typical formula to treat stagnation and accumulation of food in the Spleen and Stomach. It is indicated in both acute and chronic cases. However, its efficacy at relieving the pain is limited, therefore, some other herbs should be added into prescription, such as Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g and Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi 10g to relieve the pain.


Alternative formulas



Zhi zhu wan


Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill. When there is stagnation and accumulation of Food due to weakness of the Spleen and Stomach, this formula could be applied. This formula has function to activate the Spleen and Stomach, promote the digestion and eliminate food stagnation. Of cause, its function to relieve the pain is quite limited, so Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g, Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g and Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi 10g to relieve the pain.


Zhi shi dao zhi wan


Immature Bitter Organe Pill to Guide Out Stagnation. When there is stagnation and accumulation of food for a long time and there is formation of Damp-Phlegm mixed with Heat, showing epigastric pain and abdominal pain, distension in the abdomen, and constipation, etc., this formula should be used. Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g and Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi 10g should be combined with it to relieve the pain.


Modifications





1. If there are some External symptoms, add Zi Su Ye Folium Perillae 5g and Huo Xiang Herba Agastachis 10g to expel the Wind-Cold and relieve the External symptoms


2. If there is severe vomiting, add Zhu Ru Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam 10g and Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae 10g to transform the Damp-Phlegm, descend the Stomach-Qi and relieve the vomiting


3. If there is severe constipation, add Zhi Shi Fructus Aurantii Immaturus 10g to promote bowel movement and relieve the constipation


4. If there is abdominal pain and distension, add Mu Xiang Radix Aucklandiae 10g together to regulate the Qi in the Intestine and stop the pain


5. If there is food stagnation due to over emotions, add Chai Hu Radix Bupleuri 5g and Bai Shao Yao Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae 10g to disperse the Liver-Qi and harmonise the Stomach so as to assist the digestion.

Main points


CV-12 Zhongwan, ST-36 Zusanli, BL-21 Weishu, ST-25 Tianshu, SP-9 Yinlingquan, SP-6 Sanyinjiao and PC-6 Neiguan. Reducing method is used on these points.


Explanations





▪ CV-12, the Front Collecting point of the Stomach and the Gathering point for the Fu organs, can transport the food and promote the digestion. ST-36, the Lower Sea point of the Stomach, strengthens the function of the Spleen and Stomach, promotes the digestion and reduces food stagnation. These two points can regulate the Stomach-Qi and stop epigastric pain.


▪ BL-21, the Back Transporting point of the Stomach, is used together with CV-12 to regulate the Stomach-Qi.


▪ ST-25, the Front Collecting point of the Large Intestine, regulates the Qi in the Large Intestine and reduces food stagnation.


▪ PC-6, the Confluence point of the Yin Linking Vessel and the Connecting point of the Pericardium channel, can smooth the Stomach-Qi and relieve pain. It can also disperse the Qi in the chest and release emotional distress.


▪ SP-6 and SP-9 can activate the Spleen, promote the digestion and relieve the food stagnation and accumulation.

ST-19 Burong, ST-21 Liangmen, ST-34 Liangqiu, ST-38 Tiaokou, ST-40 Fenglong, ST-42 Chongyang and SP-3 Taibai, etc.


Modifications





1. If there are some External symptoms, add LI-4 and TE-5 to expel the Wind-Cold and release the External symptoms


2. If stress is involved, add LR-3, the Source point of the Liver channel, and GB-34, the Lower Sea point of the Gallbladder, to disperse the Liver-Qi and promote the digestion


3. If there is depression, add CV-17, the Gathering point for the Qi, LU-7, the Connecting point of the Lung, and LI-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine, to regulate the Lung-Qi, disperse the restrained Qi and promote digestion.
