Main formula



Juan bi tang


Remove Painful Obstruction Decoction. Besides its ability to dispel the Wind, eliminate the Cold, resolve the Damp and relieve the pain, this formula also has some effect on tonifyng the Qi and Blood. Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong 10g, Hai Feng Teng Caulis Piperis Futokadsurae 10g and Sang Zhi Fructus Gardeniae 10g should be added to relieve the pain.


Alternative formulas



Ma huang fu zi xi xin tang


Ephedra, Prepared Aconite, and Asarum Decoction. Originally this formula was indicated in invasion of Wind-Cold resulting from deficiency of Yang; however, it can also be used to dispel the Wind-Cold, warm the channel and relieve elbow pain. Qiang Huo Rhizoma seu Radix Notopterygii 10g, Du Huo Radix Angelicae Pubescentis 10g, Hai Feng Teng Caulis Piperis Futokadsurae 10g and Chuan Xiong Radix Ligustici Wallichii 10g should be added to increase the effect of promoting sweating and relieving the pain.


Qiang huo sheng shi tang


Notopterygium Dispelling Dampness Decoction. This formula is relatively good at dispelling the Wind, eliminating the Cold, resolving the Damp and relieving the pain. Xi Xin Herba Asari 5g, Yu Jin Tuber Curcumae 10g, Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae 10g and Ji Xue Teng Caulis Milletiae Reticulatae 10g could be added to strengthen the effect on pain.


Jia wei xuan bi tang


Disband Painful Obstruction Decoction. This formula can clear the Heat, eliminate the Damp and relieve the pain, indicated in elbow pain due to invasion of Wind, Damp and Heat. Jiang Huang Rhizoma Curcumae Longae 15g, Hai Tong Pi Cortex Erythrinae 15g and Sang Zhi Ramulus Mori 15g, etc., could be added to the prescription to relieve the pain.


Modifications





1. If there is severe pain at night, add Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 15g to promote the circulation of Blood and relieve the pain


2. If the elbow has an aversion to cold, add Gan Jiang Rhizoma Zingiberis 5g to warm the channels and dispel Cold


3. If there is a fever, add Chai Hu Radix Bupleuri 15g to dispel the Wind and reduce the fever.


4. If there is a feeling of heaviness in the elbow, add Fang Ji Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae 10g to eliminate the Damp, promote the circulation of Qi and relieve the pain


5. If the elbow is red and swollen, add Ren Dong Teng Caulis Lonicerae 15g and Xi Xian Cao Herba Siegesbeckiae 10g to dispel the Wind, clear the Heat and subside the swelling


6. If there is a fever and a burning sensation at the elbow, add Sheng Di Huang Radix Rehmanniae Recens 10g and Chi Shao Radix Paeoniae Rubra 10g to clear the Heat, reduce the fever and remove the Toxin


7. If there is neck pain, add Ge Gen Radix Puerariae 10g to harmonise the collateral and relieve the pain in the neck


8. If there is a headache, add Chuan Xiong Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong 10g and Man Jing Zi Fructus Viticis 10g to dispel the Wind and sedate the headache.

Feng Shi Pian Wind-Damp Tablet for invasion of Wind-Cold and Damp


Feng Shi Xiao Tong Pian Wind-Damp Dispel Pain Pill for invasion of Wind, Damp and Heat.






LI-4 Hegu, LI-10 Shousanli, TE-5 Waiguan, GB-20 Fengchi and some local Ah Shi points. Reducing method is used on these points. Moxibustion should be applied If there is no invasion of Wind, Damp and Heat.



Explanations





▪ LI-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine channel, dispels the Wind, relieves the External symptoms, promotes the circulation of Qi and relieves the pain


▪ LI-10 promotes the circulation of Qi in the channel, dispels the Wind and relieves the pain


▪ TE-5, the Connecting point of the Triple Burner channel, dispels the Wind, harmonises the collateral and relieves the pain


▪ GB-20 dispels the Wind, relieves the External symptoms and sedates the pain


▪ The Ah Shi points dispel Wind-Cold, promote the circulation of Qi in the locality and relieve the pain.

Moxibustion could warm the channels and collaterals, promote the Qi and Blood circulation and relieve the pain.
