CHAPTER 71 D-DIMER IN DVT AND PE
D-dimer for the Exclusion of Acute Venous Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism: A Systematic Review
Stein PD, Hull RD, Patel KC, et al. Ann Intern Med. 2004;140(8):589–602
BACKGROUND
Since the 1980s a wide variety of D-dimer tests were studied for the exclusion of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolus (PE). The different tests reported widely varying accuracy. In the late 1990s, investigators attempted to establish unified recommendations regarding D-dimer testing but no consensus was reached, partially due to the variability of testing methodologies, identifying a need for a large scale review of the literature.
OBJECTIVE
To assess the accuracy of commonly used D-dimer assays in clinical practice.
METHODS
Systemic literature review of all published trials addressing the use of D-dimer to exclude PE or DVT between 1983 and 2003.
