An Intervention to Decrease Catheter-related Bloodstream Infections in the ICU

BACKGROUND
Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) were estimated to cause 80,000 cases of central line-associated infections and as many as 28,000 deaths in the United States. Each catheter-related infection can cost as much as $11,971 to $54,000, per infection. At the time of this study, it was unclear how many of these infections were preventable. It was theorized that changes in the placement and management of central catheters could potentially save thousands of lives and reduce hospital stays; however, no study had broadly demonstrated optimal practices to achieve this goal.
OBJECTIVES
To implement an intervention to reduce the incidence of CLABSI in intensive care units (ICUs).
METHODS
Prospective observational study at 67 hospitals, including 108 ICUs in Michigan between March 2004 and September 2005.
