BACKGROUND


Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is responsible for 110,000 hospital admissions annually with a mortality rate up to 10% for patients requiring hospitalization. Effective management of DKA depends on knowing the degree of acidosis. Traditionally this was monitored through arterial sampling which can be painful, technically difficult, and result in vessel injury. At the time of this study, the correlation between venous and arterial pH was well understood but had not been shown to correlate, in the setting of the metabolic derangement that occurs with DKA.
