Abdominal pain
Cinnamon Twig Decoction and Correct Qi Heaven Fragrant Powder. This combination is made when there is abdominal pain caused by invasion of Wind-Cold and there are many External symptoms.
The first formula is specially used to dispel Wind-Cold and relieve the External symptoms. is doesn’t have specific function to relieve the abdominal pain. The second formula is specially used to promote the Qi circulation and relieve the pain, such as breast pain and abdominal pain. Since this kind of Qi stagnation is not caused by disorder of the Liver, so Xiao Yao San is not indicated in this case.
Galangal and Cyperus Pill and Correct Qi Heaven Fragrant Powder. This combination is given when there is abdominal pain caused by invasion of Wind-Cold and there are not many External symptoms.
1. If there is severe pain, add Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g to invigorate the Qi and Blood circulation so as to stop the pain
2. If there is severe cramp, add Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae Alba 15g and Zhi Gan Cao Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparata 6g to regulate the Qi movement and harmonise the tendons so as to stop the pain
3. If there is severe Cold, add Zhi Fu Zi Radix Aconiti Praeparata 10g to expel the Cold and warm the channels
4. If there is lower abdominal pain, add Xiao Hui Xiang Fructus Foeniculi 6g and Rou Gui Cortex Cinnamomi 3g to warm the Lower Burner and Kidney and disperse the Cold.
Liang Fu Wan Galangal and Cyperus Pill.
CV-6 Qihai, ST-36 Zusanli, SP-4 Gongsun, CV-12 Zhongwan, SP-15 Daheng, GB-34 Yanglingquan and LI-4 Hegu. Reinforcing method is used on the first two points, and reducing method on the last four.
▪ CV-6, so called the Sea of Qi, can strengthen and disperse the Qi so as to expel the Cold.
▪ ST-36, the Sea point of the Stomach channel, strengthens the function of the Spleen, warms the Middle Burner and treats the disorder of the Fu organs.
▪ CV-12 is the Gathering point for all the Fu organs. It can regulate the Qi in the Fu organs so as to stop pain.
▪ SP-4, the Connecting point of the Spleen channel, and SP-15 promote the transportation in the Small and Large Intestines and strengthen the function of the Spleen.
▪ GB-34, the Lower Sea point of the Gallbladder, regulates the Liver-Qi and relieves the cramp
▪ LI-4, the Source point of the Large Intestine, promotes the movement of Qi in the Large Intestine and relieves the pain.
LI-7 Wenliu, LI-10 Shousanli, ST-22 Guanmen, ST-25 Tianshu, SP-12 Chongmen, SP-15 Daheng and LR-3 Taichong, etc.
1. If there is pain above the navel, add CV-10 and ST-24 in order to relieve the pain
2. If there is pain below the navel, add ST-27 to relieve the pain
3. If the pain is associated with the sides of the abdomen, add LR-13 to regulate the Liver-Qi and relieve the pain
4. If there is pain around the navel, add ST-25, CV-9 and CV-7 to relieve the pain
5. If there is pain in the lower abdomen, add CV-14 to regulate the Qi circulation there
6. If there is severe pain, add SP-6 and moxibustion on CV-6 to promote the Qi and Blood circulation
7. If there is abdominal distension, add SP-4 to strengthen the Spleen and cause the Qi to descend in the Penetrating Vessel
8. If there is much External symptoms, add LU-7 and GB-20 to dispel the Wind-Cold and relieve the External symptoms.
Sudden onset of abdominal pain of a distending nature, which is alleviated by warmth, urgent diarrhoea with gurgling sound, a poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, slight fever, aversion to cold, a blocked nose and headache, heaviness over the body and head, a white and greasy tongue coating and a soft pulse.
Expel the Wind-Cold, transform Damp and relieve the pain.
Agastache Upright Qi Powder. This formula is very effective at treating abdominal pain due to invasion of Cold-Damp to the Spleen and Stomach. It has functions which dispel the Wind, eliminate the Cold, resolve the Damp, relieve the External symptoms and sedate the pain. Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g and Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g, etc., could be added into the prescription to increase the effect of relieving the pain.
Rectify the Qi Powder Worth More than Gold. This formula is formed based on Ping Wei San by adding Huo Xiang Herba Agastachis and Ban Xia Rhizoma Pinelliae. It dispels the Wind-Damp, eliminates Damp-Phlegm in the body, harmonises the Stomach and relieves the pain. Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g and Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g, etc., could be added to relieve the pain.
Harmonize the Six Decoction. This formula can dispel Cold-Damp, eliminate Damp-Phlegm, activate the Spleen and Stomach and relieve the pain. Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g and Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g, etc., could be added to relieve the pain.
1. If there is severe pain, add Gui Zhi Ramulus Cinnamomi 10g to disperse the Yang-Qi, expel the Cold and relieve the pain
2. If there is severe abdominal distension, add Mu Xiang Radix Aucklandiae 6g to regulate the Qi in the Liver and Large Intestine channel.
Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Wan (Pian) Agastache Upright Qian Pill (Tablet).
LU-7 Lieque, ST-25 Tianshu, LI-4 Hegu, ST-37 Shangjuxu, ST-38 Tiaokou and SP-9 Yinlingquan. Reducing method is used on these points.
▪ ST-25 is the Front Collecting point of the Large Intestine channel, ST-37 is the Low Sea point of the Large Intestine and LI-4 is the Source point of the Large Intestine. These three points used together regulate the Qi movement in the Large Intestine and promote its function.
▪ ST-38 is the Lower Sea point of the Small Intestine; SP-9 is the Sea point of the Spleen channel. These two points can transform Damp, stop diarrhoea and relieve the abdominal pain.
▪ LU-7, in combination with LI-4, dispels Wind-Cold and relieves the External symptoms.
LI-7 Wenliu, LI-10 Shousanli, ST-25 Tianshu, ST-26 Wailing, ST-36 Zusanli, ST-43 Xiangu, SP-14 Fujie, SP-16 Fuai, SP-6 Sanyinjiao and LR-3 Taichong, etc.
1. If there is severe Cold in the Middle Burner, apply moxibustion on CV-8 to strengthen the Spleen-Yang and expel the Cold
2. If there is severe pain above the navel, add CV-12 and ST-36 to regulate the Fu organs
3. If there is pain in the sides of the abdomen, add LR-13, the Front Collecting point of the Spleen and the Confluence point for the Zang organs, to regulate the Liver-Qi and harmonise the Spleen
4. If there is pain in the lower abdomen, apply moxibustion on CV-4 to strengthen the Yang in the Lower Burner
5. If there is severe heaviness over the body and head, add ST-40 to eliminate Damp-Phlegm and relieve the heaviness over the body and head.
A 55-year-old-woman was suffering from abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Three months previously, she had developed dysentery. After treatment with Western medicine, this cleared up, but she continued to suffer from abdominal pain with a cold sensation around the navel, and had diarrhoea four to six times a day. These became worse after eating cold or raw food. She also had abdominal distension, a poor appetite, belching, was generally tired, and had cold limbs, a pale tongue with a white coating and a deep, slow and slightly wiry pulse.
Accumulation of Cold-Damp in the Middle Burner and deficiency of Spleen-Yang.
Expel Cold, transform Damp, warm the Yang and strengthen the Spleen.
ST-25, SP-9, ST-36, CV-8 and CV-12. Reducing method was used on the first two points, reinforcing method is applied on ST-36, and moxibustion is applied on CV-8 and CV-12.
▪ ST-25, the Front Collecting point of the Large Intestine, can promote the transportation function of the Large Intestine and reduce the accumulation of Cold-Damp
▪ SP-9, the Sea point, can transform Damp in the Middle Burner and reduce the diarrhoea
▪ ST-36, the Lower Sea point, can strengthen the Spleen, Stomach and Small and Large Intestines
▪ Moxibustion on CV-8 and CV-12 can expel Cold in the Middle Burner and warm the Spleen-Yang.
After 1 month of treatment, the patient had recovered.
Sudden onset of abdominal pain with a distending nature and burning feeling, which is alleviated by cold, urgent diarrhoea with gurgling sound, burning sensation in the anus, a poor appetite, nausea and vomiting, fever, aversion to cold, heaviness over the body and head, red tongue, a yellow and greasy tongue coating, a soft and rapid pulse.
Expel the Wind, clear the Heat, transform the Damp and relieve the pain.
Kudzu, Coptis and Scutellaria Decoction. This formula is very effective at treating abdominal pain due to invasion of Damp-Heat to the Large Intestine. It has functions which dispel the Wind, clear the Heat, resolve the Damp, relieve the External symptoms and sedate the pain. Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g, Mu Xiang Radix Aucklandiae 10g, Bai Shao YaoRadix Paeoniae Lactiflorae 10g and Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g, etc., could be added into the prescription to increase the effect of relieving the pain.
1. If there is severe poor appetite, add Lai Fu Zi Semen Raphani 10g and Jiao Shen Qu Massa Fermentata 10g to promote the digestion and improve the appetite
2. If there is severe abdominal distension, add Mu Xiang Radix Aucklandiae 10g to regulate the Qi in the Liver and Large Intestine channel
3. If there is much diarrhoea, add Fu Ling Poria 12g and Cang Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis 10g to eliminate Damp and stop the diarrhoea.
Ge Gen Qin Lian Pian Kudzu, Coptis and Scutellaria Tablet.
LU-7 Lieque, ST-25 Tianshu, LI-4 Hegu, LI-11 Quchi, ST-37 Shangjuxu, ST-38 Tiaokou, SP-6 Sanyinjiao and SP-9 Yinlingquan. Reducing method is used on these points.
▪ ST-25 is the Front Collecting point of the Large Intestine channel, ST-37 is the Low Sea point of the Large Intestine and LI-4 is the Source point of the Large Intestine. These three points used together regulate the Qi movement in the Large Intestine and promote its function.
▪ ST-38 is the Lower Sea point of the Small Intestine; SP-9 is the Sea point of the Spleen channel. These two points can transform Damp, stop diarrhoea and relieve the abdominal pain.
▪ LU-7, in combination with LI-4, dispels Wind-Damp and relieves the External symptoms.
▪ LI-11 and SP-6 clear the Heat and eliminate Damp in the body.
LI-10 Shousanli, ST-27 Daju, ST-30 Qichong, ST-36 Zusanli, ST-37 Shangjuxu, SP-14 Fujie, SP-16 Fuai, SP-3 Taibai and TE-6 Zhigou, etc.
1. If there is high fever, add GV-14 to clear the Heat and reduce the fever
2. If there is severe vomiting, add CV-12 regulate the Stomach, descend the Stomach-Qi and relieve the vomiting
3. If there is severe diarrhoea, add ST-28 to eliminate Damp-Heat and stop the diarrhoea
4. If there is very poor appetite, add SP-3 to activate the Spleen and improve the appetite
5. If there is severe heaviness over the body and head, add ST-40 to eliminate Damp-Phlegm and relieve the heaviness over the body and head.
Symptoms and signs are sub-acute or chronic onset of abdominal pain, which is of fixed location in most cases, but can be spread throughout the abdomen, accompanied by abdominal distension, loose stool or diarrhoea, possible blood and mucus in the stool with urgent and frequent bowel movement, tenesmus, scanty urine, a red tongue with yellow and greasy coating and a slippery and rapid pulse.
Clear the Heat, eliminate the Damp, relieve the obstruction and stop the abdominal pain.
Pulsatilla Decoction. This formula is very effective at treating abdominal pain due to accumulation of Damp-Heat in the Large Intestine. It can clear the Heat, eliminate the Damp and sedate the pain. Chuan Lian Zi Fructus Meliae Toosendan 10g, Mu Xiang Radix Aucklandiae 10g and Yan Hu Suo Rhizoma Corydalis 10g, etc., could be added to the prescription to increase the effect of relieving the pain.
1. If there is high fever, add Jin Yin Hua Flos Lonicerae 12g, Ma Chi Xian Herba Portulacae 10g to clear the Heat and remove the Toxin.
2. If there is sticky and loose stool with difficulty in defecation, add Da Huang Radix et Rhizoma Rhei 5g till 10g to clear the Heat, remove the Toxin and promote the defecation.
3. If there is a discharge of more blood than mucus in the stool, add Zi Cao Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi 12g, Huai Hua Flos Sophorae 10g and Di Yu Radix Sanguisorbae 10g to cool the Blood and stop the bleeding.
4. If there is a discharge of more mucus than blood in the stool, add Fu Ling Poria 12g and Yi Yi Ren Semen Coicis 12g to transform the Damp.
5. If there is pronounced tenesmus, add Bai Shao Radix Paeoniae Alba 12g to moderate the Qi in the Large Intestine.
6. If there is Spleen weakness manifesting as tiredness and a poor appetite, add Dang Shen Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae 12g and Bai Zhu Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae 10g to tonify the Spleen and transform the Damp.
7. If there is stagnation of the Liver-Qi, add Xiang Fu Rhizoma Cyperi 10g and Chai Hu Radix Bupleuri 5g to disperse the Liver-Qi.
Huang Lian Su Pian Coptis Extract Tablet.
ST-25 Tianshu, ST-37 Shangjuxu, SP-15 Daheng, SP-9 Yinlingquan, SP-10 Xuehai, LI-4 Hegu, LI-11 Quchi and LR-3 Taichong. In acute stage, reducing method is used. Deep needling is essential, with the needle left in place generally for 30 minutes. After the acute stage, even method is used, and shallow needling is required. During the recovery stage, add ST-36 Zusanli.
▪ ST-25 is the Front Collecting point of the Large Intestine, LI-4 is the Source point of the Large Intestine channel and ST-37 is the Lower Sea point of the Large Intestine. These three points together regulate the Qi and Blood in the Large Intestine and relieve the abdominal pain.
▪ SP-15 is able to promote the transportation function of the Large Intestine and stop the pain. SP-9, the Sea point of the Spleen channel, can reduce the Damp-Heat in the Intestine and reduce mucus and pus in the stool.
▪ SP-10 can cool the Blood and regulate it so as to stop bleeding and reduce blood in the stool.
▪ LI-11, the Sea point of the Large Intestine channel respectively, clears the Heat from the Large Intestine and eliminates the Toxin.
▪ LR-3, the Source Point of the Liver channel, harmonises the Liver, and reduces Qi stagnation of the Liver so as to regulate in turn the Qi of the Large Intestine.
▪ ST-36, the Lower Sea point of the Stomach, is an important point for tonification, strengthens the Spleen-Qi and regulates the function of the Spleen, Stomach and Large Intestine.
LI-10 Shousanli, ST-27 Daju, ST-30 Qichong, ST-36 Zusanli, ST-39 Xiajuxu, ST-41 Jiexi, ST-42 Chongyang, ST-44 Neiting, SP-Dadu, and SP-3 Taibai, etc.
1. If there is severe pain, add LI-6 and LI-7 to regulate the Qi and stop the pain
2. If there is fever, add ST-44, the Spring point of the Stomach channel, and LI-1, the Well point of the Large Intestine channel, to clear the Heat, eliminate the Toxin and reduce the fever
3. If there is a discharge of more blood than mucus in the stool, add KI-6 and SP-1 to reduce the Heat, cool the Blood and regulate it
4. If there is a discharge of more mucus than blood in the stool, add SP-3 to transform the Damp
5. If there is tenesmus, add BL-29 to regulate the movement of Qi in the Intestines
6. If there is an aggravation of abdominal pain by stress, add GB-20, and BL-18, the Back Transporting point of the Liver, to smooth the Liver and promote the Liver-Qi circulation.
A 23-year-old woman had been complaining of severe abdominal pain after suffering from colitis for 1 year. The colitis started suddenly with very heavy abdominal pain, and loss of a lot of blood and mucus in the stool. Her bowel movement was irregular and sometimes she also suffered from constipation. She was treated for more than 6 months with Western medicines, and the blood and mucus had improved, but the abdominal pain and constipation remained. The abdominal pain was on the right side, and was constant and heavy in nature with cramp in the lower abdomen. She felt tired and did not sleep well because of the pain. She had no appetite, and felt better from warmth applied to the back and lower abdomen. She had a dark red tongue with a red tip and white and thick coating. Her pulse was weak, soft and deep.
